About Affection

“Thanks for the kind word and warm participation. I was caressed so little when I was a little kid, that now, as an adult, I accept affection as something unusual, yet having little experience. Therefore I would like to be gentle with the other, but I don’t know how to do it: I became coarse and lazy, even though I know that it could be impossible for our brother to subsist without affection.”
Letter of Anton Chekhov to V. A. Tihonov (Moscow, Mart 7, 1889)
